Is Cholesterol a Myth? (Part I)

The Cholesterol Myth

Cholesterol has become a word that is synonymous with unhealthy.  It is described as a sticky, oily substance that clogs our arteries and causes heart disease.  We have been led to believe that our cholesterol needs to be as low as possible and even extremely low cholesterol numbers have been suggested for "high risk" individuals.

However, these insanely low numbers could never be achieved without the use of prescription drugs.  These cholesterol-lowering medications have some of the worst side effects in the pharmaceutical world, including heart attacks and stroke!

Low fat diets have been suggested to keep cholesterol under control. Saturated fats like butter and animal fat have been replaced by refined oils and hydrogenated fats like margarine.  All this is happening while obesity and heart disease rates continue to rise.  Something is seriously wrong here and I truly don't believe it's cholesterol's fault.

We Need Cholesterol

First of all, cholesterol is not our enemy.  It is a very useful substance and it has many important jobs in our body.  Some of the many benefits of Cholesterol include:

-      It helps to produce cell membranes.
-      Acts as a precursor to the manufacturing of hormones.
-      Is a precursor to the formation of vitamin D.
-      It helps to formulate bile acids to digest fat.
-      It is needed for proper function of serotonin receptors in the brain.
-      It helps form memories in the brain.
-      It is important in maintaining the health of the intestinal wall.

The two forms of cholesterol, HDL and LDL, are now deemed as "Healthy Cholesterol" and "Bad Cholesterol."  The reality is neither is bad.  They are both needed and have very important roles to play in the body.

LDL cholesterol acts like a bandage and helps repair arterial damage.  HDL takes cholesterol from your body and arteries and shuttles it back to the liver where it can be reused.

Can your cholesterol be too high?  Yes, but the reason it's high is because your body is trying to protect itself.  Remember, cholesterol comes on the scene when there is damage.  It is not the bad guy; it just repairs and bandages.

Inflammation is what's causing the damage and cholesterol shows up because it's just doing its job.  If you can get rid of the things causing the inflammation, your cholesterol will naturally normalize.  So, essentially, the key to good cholesterol is lowering your body's inflammation levels.

Keys to Lowering Inflammation

How to keep inflammation - and cholesterol - levels low:

-      Do not smoke
-      Avoid hydrogenated oils like margarine and shortening
-      Greatly reduce your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates
-      Avoid refined oils like canola, corn, and soy oil
-      Lower your stress levels
-      Exercise regularly
-      Consume foods rich in A, C, D and minerals, including iodine.
-      Incorporate healthy saturated fats into your diet like extra virgin coconut oil
-      Take a quality fish oil daily

Side Effects of Very Low Cholesterol

Just like having too much cholesterol is not healthy, having too little is just as bad.  Having very low cholesterol can cause many side effects.  Every single cell in your body needs cholesterol to survive.  Some MDs and scientists are now saying that levels of 150 and below can cause psychological problems.

Unfortunately, some doctors are still having their patients shoot for levels as low as 100! This is extremely low and cannot naturally be achieved.  Statins and other cholesterol lowering drugs are prescribed to reach these low levels.  These are some of the most dangerous prescriptions you can take.

If your cholesterol is too low you can experience:

-      Depression
-      Violent and aggressive behavior
-      Fatigue and Lethargy

Reading Your Numbers

I'm sure you're wondering that if 150 is too low, then what is considered too high?  Your total cholesterol is not your best determining factor.  Your HDL levels play such an important role. If your HDL is high, then your total cholesterol can be higher as well.

Here is the new and improved way of determining your heart disease risk. Take your HDL and divide it by your Total Cholesterol.  It should be above 24%.

-      HDL/Total Cholesterol=  Ideally above 24%

Triglycerides, Lipoprotein, and C-reactive protein levels have shown to be better indicators of heart disease risk than total cholesterol.  If your physician has not run these labs, you can request them.

Don't live in fear if your cholesterol is above 200.  Take your HDL to total cholesterol ratio into consideration.

You can also change your cholesterol with diet.  I'm not talking about a low fat, low cholesterol diet.  Part II of the Cholesterol Myth will include some dietary guidelines to help keep you and your heart in good health.

Exposed: Shocking Cholesterol Cover-Up

Why high cholesterol worries are as obsolete as cassette tapes

The real cause of heart disease has finally been discovered - and it's NOT high cholesterol.

However - this information is not for everyone...for years we've been told that high cholesterol will eventually lead to a faulty ticker...if you're one of the "Blind Faith Believers" then this is not for you.

But if you're concerned about heart disease, have a mind of your own, and choose to decide the course of action based on facts...and want to know what really causes heart disease - then this may be the most important information you're ever going to get on the subject.

Because a Danish physician has discovered that all those years of avoiding saturated fats and high cholesterol foods - were wasted.

And this is no joke - heart disease is a major cause of death the world over - especially true in the U.S. and Australia... mostly blamed on cholesterol and a diet high in saturated fat.

This doctor discovered several studies that blow the lid off this cruel cover-up and found that "...old people with low cholesterol died twice as often from a heart attack as did old people with high cholesterol..."

If you think this is crazy...a flash-in-the-pan...the ravings of an old coot...

It's not.

And if you enjoy foods that have been banished from the table because of the Mainstream Medical Cover-Up...  if you or anyone you know is taking statins to lower their cholesterol - then you owe it to yourself to take a look at this... and discover the truth...

FW: Surah az-Zalzalah (99)

-------Original Message-------
From: Aqib Khan
Date: 03-01-2011 05:49:34 PM
Subject: FW: Surah AZ-Zalzalah (99)

Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi WA sallam) said, "Whoever recites Surah Zalzalah (99) will get the reward of reciting half the Qur'an." [Tirmidhi]

An old man, saying that his heart had difficulty in remembering, and his tongue was sluggish asked the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi WA sallam); "Teach me the reading of a comprehensive surah." So Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi WA sallam) taught him to recite "Idha dul dilatil ardhu dhildalaha" (Surah Zalzalah) up to the end.

Why is this surah so important? If its recitation carries so much reward, it means that Allah (subhana WA ta'ala) wants us to repeatedly be reminded of its content. The theme of this surah is the life after death and presentation in it before man of the full record of the deeds done by him in this world. We are told briefly how the second life will take place and how confounding it will be for man. This very earth on which man has lived and performed all kinds of deeds thoughtlessly, and about which he never could fancy that this lifeless thing would at some time in the future bear witness to his deeds, will speak out on that Day by Allah's command and will state in respect of each individual person what act he had committed at a particular time and place. Men on that Day, rising from their graves, will come out in their varied groups from all corners of the earth, to be shown their deeds and works, and the presentation of their deeds will be so detailed that not an atom's weight of any good or evil act will be left hidden from anybody's eyes.

It might have been difficult for a man of ancient times to understand how the earth will speak and narrate the annals and events happening on it on the Day of Resurrection, but in the present age of the inventions of the cinema, loudspeaker, radio, television, tape-recorder, electronic equipment, etc., it is no longer difficult to understand how the earth will narrate its annals. The impression of whatever man speaks is preserved in the air, in the radio waves, on the particles of the walls and floors and ceilings of the houses, and on the environments of the road, plain or field if he spoke outside the house. If Allah so wills He can make these things repeat all these voices precisely in the way these were uttered in the first instance by man. Man at that time will hear with his ears and know that it was his own voice, and all his acquaintances also will testify that whatever they were hearing was the person's own voice and his own accent. Whatever man has done anywhere on the earth, and in whatever state, has had its impression on everything of the environment and its image inscribed on it. Even if he did something in pitch darkness, there are such rays in the Kingdom of God for which darkness and light make no difference; they can preserve his image in any case. All these images will pass before man on the Day of Resurrection like a motion picture, and will show him when and where he had done something during his life on earth.(Tafhim al-Quran, Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi)

FW: My Best Day

-------Original Message-------
From: Aqib Khan

Subject: FW: My Best Day

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi WA sallam) said: "Allah will say to the inhabitants of Paradise: 'O inhabitants of Paradise!.... Are you contented?' And they will say: 'And how should we not be contented, O Lord, when You have given to us that which You have given to no one else of Your creation?'" [Bukhari]

Out of all His creations, Allah (subhana WA ta'ala) chose you to give eternal life to. He made Jannat for you. Allah wishes to be with you for eternity. For this He bestows eternal life to you. After you reach Jannat you become immortal. The ultimate pleasure in Jannat is that you will be allowed to look at Allah's face. All that exists is perishable except Allah's face. [Al-Quran 28:88] Allah (subhana WA ta'ala) tells us that He was a hidden treasure. He created us so that we could have this treasure. Those who realize this are intense in their love of their Lord. [Al-Quran 2:165]

Allah's justice demanded that He ask us to do something, no matter how insignificant, in exchange for which we are loved more than all creation and granted immortality. So He gave us free will – the choice to recognize Him or deny Him. But He loaded the scales heavily in favour of our being able to recognize Him. He created all our souls at the time that He created Adam (alaihis salam) and we all testified to Allah being our Creator and Cherisher at that time. Our testimony is embedded in our sub-conscious mind, because of which we know instinctively that He is to be worshipped and that the beauty of the universe is His doing.

May we Love Allah (subhana WA ta'ala) as He should be loved, and may we worship Him as He should be worshipped. A dua made by a Bedouin that particularly impressed Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi WA sallam) was:

"Oh Allah; Make my best day – the Day that I meet you."

Fw: B Vitamins Better Than Drugs…

Al Sears, MD

Today I want to talk to you about B vitamins. They are your best protection against heart attack and stroke and more powerful than any drug.

B vitamins are controversial, but they shouldn't be… a lot of what you hear about them comes from misleading reports sponsored by drug companies.

Big Pharma is working on drug versions of B vitamins, especially B6. They're hoping you'll "trust" their drug version over the kind you get from a multi-vitamin.

But really, why would you pay hundreds of dollars for a prescription form of B6 when you can get it at your local vitamin store for pennies?

B vitamins are water soluble, which means you'll find them in the meat of animal protein, instead of the fatty part. Some B vitamins are found in fruits and vegetables, but your best source is red meat. And for B12, red meat is your ONLY source.

About 25 years ago, I developed a phrase to help my fellow medical students remember the names for all the B vitamins. I still use this to teach nutrition today:

Teddy Roosevelt Never Painted Pyramids Blue In Fancy Clothes.

It contains the first letter of all the B vitamins in numerical order. (The missing numbers are compounds researchers thought were vitamins but turned out to be nonessential.) The more absurd the image, the more likely you'll remember it.

B Vitamin

Function

Best Sources

Vitamin B1

Thiamine

Circulation, blood formation, brain function

Organ meat, yeast, peas, pork, beans

Vitamin B2

Riboflavin

Blood cell formation, antibodies, cataract prevention

Meat, poultry, fish, nuts, kidney, liver, green vegetables

Vitamin B3

Niacin

Circulation, nervous system, healthy skin

Lean meats, nuts, legumes and potatoes

Vitamin B5

Pantothenic Acid

Adrenal hormones, antibodies, neurotransmitters, stamina

Eggs, pork, beef, fish, milk, and most fruits/vegetables

Vitamin B6

Pyridoxine

Brain/immune system function, cancer immunity, mild diuretic

Chicken, fish, kidney, liver, eggs, bananas, lima beans, walnuts

Vitamin B7

Biotin

Cell growth, metabolism of carbohydrates/fats/proteins

Liver, eggs yolks, nuts, cauliflower, milk, legumes

Vitamin B8

Inositol

Hair growth, reduces cholesterol and plaque

Heart, fruit, milk, nuts, meat, vegetables

Vitamin B9

Folic Acid

"Brain food," energy, red blood cells, strengthens immunity

Beef, lamb, pork, chicken liver, eggs, green leafy vegetables, salmon

Vitamin B12

Cyanocobalamin

Prevent anemia/nerve damage, digestion, cellular longevity

Lamb, beef, herring, mackerel, liver, oysters, poultry, clams, eggs

But there's more you need to know… I uncovered a 14-year study that tracked folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B6, and B12.1

30 Vitamin Cures
That Work

Scientists and researchers have found dozens of vitamins that can help ease your arthritis pain, prevent osteoporosis, and stop bladder infections.

They can also help prevent gum disease, prostate problems, and breast cancer.

But drug companies have no interest in getting that news out to you.

So, how are you going to find these pearls of natural health wisdom?

I found a great source with 30 of the best vitamin cures that really do work.

You'll be able to quickly find the best vitamins, minerals, and supplements to help heal what's ailing you.

Click here to read all about it…

Here's what I found:

• When folate is high:

o A man's chance of heart attack is cut in half.

o A woman's risk of heart attack drops by 43%.

o And a woman's risk of stroke drops by more than a third.

• When vitamin B6 is high:

o A man's chance of heart attack is reduced by over 60%.

o A woman's risk of heart attack drops by more than a half.

o And a woman's risk of stroke drops by more than a third.

Studies show that vitamin B12 deficiency leads to high homocysteine in vegetarians.2 Homocysteine is the amino acid that causes cardiovascular disease when it gets too high.

The best way to get vitamin B12 is by eating animal protein. But sometimes you have to supplement to get enough.

Folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 work together. They produce red blood cells, make your nerves function, and reduce homocysteine.

When homocysteine is high, you're also a candidate for Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and a list of birth-related issues.3,4,5

The majority of vegetarians have high homocysteine.6 But anyone with a B vitamin deficiency is at risk. Especially if you take medications such as antibiotics or birth control pills. They deplete B vitamins and cause your homocysteine to skyrocket.

To protect yourself, eat foods high in folate, vitamin B6, and B12 every day. Look at the table again. Try to get at least one of the foods from the "best sources" column into your meals at least once a day. You can also pick up a B vitamin supplement at any vitamin shop.

Al Sears, MD

Fw: Heal Your Wounds the Sweet Way

-------Original Message-------
Date: 15-07-2010 11:30:54 AM
Subject: Heal Your Wounds the Sweet Way

Al Sears, MD
11903 Southern Blvd., Ste. 208
Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411

July 15, 2010

Everybody loves sugar. And here's another reason to keep it in your cupboard.

Sugar can heal your cuts, scrapes, burns, and even large wounds without leaving a scar. It kills germs and repairs tissue better than any antiseptic or disinfectant on the market.1

Sugar may just be the first antiseptic in history. People have written about its miraculous properties for over 4,000 years, since early Egyptian times. But it fell out of favor once antibiotics became available.

I had firsthand experience during my first trip to the Amazon. When you're fighting your way through dense jungle, there isn't a day you're not cut up, scraped, or covered with bug bites. Infection sets in quickly in the tropics. And a cut on my arm was becoming infected.

My guide carried small packets of sugar with him at all times. I thought it was to sweeten his tea. But when we stopped to rest, he applied a sugar paste to the cut on my arm and covered it with gauze.

Back then I was skeptical. But he assured me it was strong, native medicine and repeated the process each time we stopped. Within a day or two, the cut was healed – and no scar remained.

Since that time, I've seen sugar used to heal throughout my travels to Africa and Asia. Other countries such as Australia and New Zealand use honey instead of sugar.

Sugar and honey both contain high levels of glucose, the kind of sugar your body uses for energy. Both are almost equal in their ability to heal, with honey taking a slight lead.2

I read an interesting review of seven studies of 264 patients treated with honey. Honey produced better outcomes, shorter healing time, and virtually no infection.3

After seven days, 58 percent of patients were healed with honey versus 19% with conventional antibiotics and unconventional treatments such as silver, amniotic membrane, and potato peelings. And 85 percent of patients treated with honey had the infection in their wound vanish compared to 30% with the other treatments.

After 21 days, 99 percent of patients were healed with honey versus 75% with other treatments. Only one study gave the infection rate at 21 days. It was 96 percent for honey versus 76% for a silver treatment.

Sugar and honey prevent scarring to the extent it heals ulcers and burns without the need for skin grafts. Scientists theorize sugar and honey encourage the production of hyaluronic acid (HA), while it prevents stiff, stringy collagen from forming.

HA fills out your skin by absorbing 3,000 times its weight of water. At the same time, sugar and honey prevent the buildup of the stringy kind of collagen that creates scar tissue. Instead, it forms a different type. A delicate, mesh-like collagen structure that brings the skin's surface back to normal and allows it to heal.4,5

The next time you have a cut, scrape, burn, or open infection, try using sugar or honey:

1. Make a paste using filtered water and sugar, or use straight honey.

2. Apply to your wound and cover with gauze or a Band-Aid.

3. Change the dressing throughout the day to prevent the gauze from sticking to the wound.

To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD
