Do You Smoke ?
By Sameh Strauch

Smoking was discovered by the Spanish conquistadors in America, about 500 years ago; from Spain, it spread to the rest of Europe, and also to the Muslim world about 100 years later.

Unfortunately, while the West has long realized the dangers of smoking and attempted to reduce it, in the Muslim lands, it has spread with little or no interference.

Early Muslim scholars, confronted with this obnoxious habit, declared it to be makrooh (detested), comparing it with such things as garlic and onions. This was due to the fact that, at that time, none was aware of the harmful effects produced by smoking, which include, cancer, heart disease, strokes, miscarriages and premature birth in women and several other diseases.

Since it has become clear that smoking is harmful, it is obligatory upon all Muslims to abstain from it, for Allaah has said: { And do not kill yourselves, Allaah is indeed Merciful to you } (Soorah 4:29),

And the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi WA sallam said: "Let there be no harming and no reciprocating harm." (Narrated by Ahmad).

Unfortunately, some Muslims, either deliberately, or through ignorance, have been guilty of misleading Muslims, by repeating the earlier judgements of scholars, that smoking is only disliked, and therefore, not forbidden.

The Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alayhi WA sallam also said: "The feet of man will not depart, on the Day of Judgement, from his standing before his Lord, until he is asked about five things: His lifetime and how he spent it; his youth and how he used it; his wealth - where he earned it and how he spent it; and how he followed what he knew." (Narrated by At-Tirmizi)

He sallallaahu alayhi WA sallam also said: "Whoever imbibes poison, killing himself with it, will be consuming his poison in the Hell-fire and will dwell therein eternally." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari)

Smoking is also harmful to the human mind and reason. One only has to observe a smoker who has been deprived of his cigarettes for a while: He is rude, nervous, quick to anger and incapable of concentration. He cannot relax until he has had his "fix". He is affected by insomnia, indigestion, episodes of acute anxiety and so on…

The effect upon those around him is almost equally unpleasant: They have to bear the disgusting fumes emitted by him; even a mild rebuke habitually elicits a violent reaction from the smoker, who is apparently only aware of the violation of what he perceives to be his rights, I.e. His right to inflict this foul smoke upon any person in any place.

It has been firmly established by scientists, that secondary smoking is at least, if not more harmful than primary smoking, particularly for children. Asthma,or allergy sufferers are forced to vacate the vicinity of the smoker.

Allaah's Messenger sallallaahu alayhi WA sallam said: "Anyone who believes in Allaah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbour."

(Narrated by Al-Bukhaari)

He sallallaahu alayhi WA sallam also said: "Verily, the example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of a perfume seller and a blacksmith: As for the perfume seller, he would either give you (some perfume), or you would buy (some) from him, or at least, you would get a good smell from him. And as for the blower of the bellows, you would either get a foul odour from him, or he would burn your clothes." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

Smoking is also a waste of ones wealth on things which offer only harm and no benefit, for Allaah, Most High says: { And do not waste [your wealth] extravagantly. Indeed the squanderers are brethren to the devils are brethren to the devils } (Soorah 17:26-27)

And the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Allaah hates for you three things: Gossipping, begging and wasting money."

(Narrated by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim).

Smoking involves consuming an evil substance. It has a noxious smell, a horrible taste and is harmful to the body.

Allaah says: { He [the Prophet] who will enjoin upon them the doing of what is right, forbid them from wrongdoing, make lawful to them the good things of life, forbid for them the evil things and lift from them their burdens and the shackles that were [formerly] upon them } (Soorah 7:157)

A smoker is not only a faasid (corrupt person), but also a mufsid (one who spreads corruption): Because of his bad example, his family members, friends and colleagues may also smoke. It is useless to say: "Do as I say, and not as I do." The problem is exacerbated when the smoker affects an air of religious piety or knowledge, because many people will take him as a role model. This multiplies his sins and increases his burden.

Genuinely pious people avoid smoking and smokers, thus the smoker is excluded from the company of the righteous.

Smokers find fasting during the month of Ramadhaan more difficult that non-smokers, because they are suffering a form of drug addiction. They rarely fast voluntary fasts since even the obligatory fast is a trial for them.

The prohibition of smoking applies equally to the user, the seller, the manufacturer, the advertiser and all those involved in its production, sale or consumption, for Allaah says: { Coporate with one another in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate with one another in sinning and transgression. And fear Allaah; verily, Allaah is severe in punishment } (Soorah 5:2)

And the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Indeed, when Allaah prohibits something, he prohibits eating its price."

(Narrated by Ahmad)

So dear brothers and sisters, if you are addicted to this foul habit, you must make your intention firmly to Allaah to stop and seek aid with Him Who hears and sees all, and always answers the supplication of the sincere Believer. He, Most High says: { And when My slaves ask you about Me, [oh, Muhammad, say that] verily, I am near [in hearing, seeing and know-ledge]: I answer the supplication of the one who asks when he asks Me } (Soorah 2:186)

Translation of a Khutbah

Orginally posted by my elder sister in her group

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Seekers-Of-Islam/

Have fear and consciousness of Allah subhanahu WA taala and ponder over events that happen around you. Learn lessons from them and remember, for the intelligent one is he who remembers and takes admonition.

The topic of this khutbah is the destructive earthquake that hit part of Japan. The earthquake which caused thousands of people to die, caused loss of wealth and properties, and forced people to seek refuge outside of their dwellings, now being without their home and their wealth, and without food and drink. The earthquake which turned security into fear, richness into poverty, caused joined families to depart, and turned life into death. Without doubt, in it is a lesson for those who take lessons and a reminder for those who remember, so that they may return to their Lord and their Creator.

The Truthful, the Chosen one (as-Saadiq al-Mustafa), sallallahu alayhi WA sallam, has informed us that a multitude of earthquakes is a sign of the proximity of the Hour. He informed us that they would be many at the end of the time.

Ahmad relates in a hadeeth narrated by Abu Hurairah, radhiallahu anhu, that the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi WA sallam said, "The Hour will not happen until knowledge is taken out, time passes quickly, earthquakes increase in number, tribulations (fitan) appear, and al-Harj increases in number." It was said, "What is al-Harj, O Rasoolullah?" He said, "Al Qatl, al Qatl (Killing)".

A lot of what is mentioned in this hadeeth has already materialized.

Happenings of earthquakes and the like from other destructive and disastrous events are the greatest evidence of the astonishing power of Allah subhanahu WA taala. Earthquakes are from among the soldiers of Allah, subhanahu WA taala, subjected to His order. He, subhanahu WA taala, causes fear in the hearts of those whom He wills, teaches lessons whom He wills and punishes whom He wills.

"And none can know the Forces of your Lord, except He." (74:31)

"For to Allah belong the Forces of the heavens and the earth." (48:7)

If the Ummah leaves Allahs Shareeah, ignores the Deen of Allah taala and follows its enemies, Allah will subjugate it to His armies, which no one knows except He. From among these armies are the earthquakes.

"Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful and severe." (11:102)

"When We decide to destroy a town, We (first) send a definite order (to obey Allah and be righteous) to those among them who are given the good things of this life. Then, they transgress therein, and thus the word (of torment) is justified against (them). Then we destroy it with complete destruction." (17:16)

Allah, subhanahu WA taala, with this earthquake makes clear to His servants a plain reality, that the kingdom of the heavens and the earth is in His Hands, subhanahu WA taala, and that He is the Irresistible and Dominant over His servants.

Some people may be astonished by what the West has from the materialistic power, from various weapons, aircraft carriers, bombs, satellites etc., and they forget that Allah, subhanahu WA taala, allowed that piece of land to move and shake, being able to shake the force of the West and the East. Everything is in His Hands, He has power over all things, and no one in the Heavens and the Earth can weaken Him, subhanahu WA taala.

Appearance of the earthquakes therefore points us to a different reality that may be absent in the minds of some people, those who are busy with this world and who are servants of materialism.

This earthquake also reminds us of the Day of Judgment. The Day when all of the Earth will shake, and not only one part of it.

Allahu subhanahu wa taala says,

"O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour is a terrible thing. The Day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant one shall drop her load, and you shall see mankind as in a drunken state. Yet they will not be drunken, but the Torment of Allah will be severe." (22:1-2)

Look what is left after the earthquake from destroyed buildings and houses, deaths of thousands, and families seeking refuge outside of their homes. What state is that in which everyone is running away, caring about nothing? So what do you think of the Day of Judgment?

"That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, and from his mother and his father, and from his wife and his children." (80:34-36)

"On the day (when the first blowing of the Trumpet is blown), the earth and the mountains will shake violently." (79:6)

Allah swt warns His servants with this earthquake to learn a lesson and be admonished, and to be ready and prepare themselves for the Day of sorting out, the day of the great earthquake, that will shake all of the earth.

Allah taala has placed in this universe Sunan, fixed and manifest laws, neither do they change nor are they replaceable. He does not have any kinship with anyone, He is the sole Creator and Ruler, and He will question and hold accountable everyone, including prophets and messengers.

"Then surely, We shall question those to whom it (the Book) was sent and We shall question the Messengers." (7:6)

From among the established Sunan of Allah is that He does not send punishment except due to sin and He does not remove it except after repentance.

Allah taala says, "Whatever misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned." (42:30)

Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: "Evil and mischief have appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned, that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah)." [30:41]

Every disaster and every calamity that befalls the servants is due to their sins and wrongdoing. So know, servants of Allah, what wrongdoing does to its doers.

Fw: *** Friendship for Allah's Sake ***

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Assalamu Alaikum WA Rahmatullahi WA Barkatuh!

Friendship for Allah's Sake

By Shawana A. Aziz

Man is liable to imitate and copy those whom he befriends.
If one's friends engage in virtuous deeds,
This would prompt him to imitate their good qualities.
Whereas, if one's friends indulge in bad practices,
Then it is very likely for him to get accustomed with their bad characteristics
And eventually incorporate them in his behavior, knowingly or unknowingly!
Such is also true concerning one's religion and beliefs
As Allah's Messenger * is reported to have said,
'Man is on the religion of his companions,
So let one of you choose whom he befriends.'

[Ahmad, Abu Dawood and Tirmidhee]

We are commanded to be very careful when choosing associates. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi WA-sallam) cited an extraordinary comparison between righteous company and evil association. He (sallallahu alaihi WA-sallam) mentioned, 'Verily, the example of a good companion in comparison to an evil one is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellow. From the first you would either get a gift of his musk's scent, buy some from him, or enjoy its good smell, while the bellow will either burn your clothes, or give you a bad, nasty smell thereof.' [Agreed upon]

We, thus, find our pious predecessors so concerned and careful about their friends that they would invoke Allah to grant them righteous associates. It is related in Saheeh al-Bukharee that Alqamah said, I went to ash-Shaam and offered two Rak'ahs prayer and then I said, 'O Allah, bless me with a good pious companion.' Then I went to some people and sat with them. An old man came and sat beside me. I asked, 'Who is he?' They replied, 'Abu ad-Darda.' I said to him, 'I prayed to Allah to bless me with a pious companion and He sent you to me. He asked me, 'From where are you?' I replied, 'From the people of al-Koofa.' [Saheeh al-Bukharee (5/86)]

Along these lines, a Muslim should be very much concerned to understand the Islamic perspective of friendship and characteristics of a good companion, in order to choose the right person to associate with. Following are some guidelines deduced from the teachings of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah, which designate the characteristics of a Muslim's friends.

Friendship for Allah's Sake

A Muslim's primary concern before choosing friends should be to seek the Pleasure of Allah in the friendship. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi WA-sallam) said, 'Whoever loves for Allah, and hates for Allah, gives for Allah and withholds for Allah, has completed his faith.' [Abu Dawood]

Friendship that is based upon the sincere purpose of seeking Allah's Pleasure brings about the love of Allah for the slave.

Abu Hurayrah (radhi allahu anhu) narrated that Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi WA-sallam) said, 'A man went to visit a brother of his in another village. Allah sent an Angel to wait for him on the road. When the man came, the Angel asked him, 'Where do you intend to go?' He said, 'I am going to visit a brother of mine who lives in this village.' The Angel asked, 'Have you done him any favor (for which you are now seeking repayment)?' He said, 'No, I just love him for the sake of Allah.' The Angel told him, 'I am a messenger to you from Allah, sent to tell you that He (Allah) Loves you as you love your brother for His sake.' [Saheeh Muslim]

From the benefits of such a virtuous friendship is that on the Day of Judgment, when, 'the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil (or molten lead, etc.) and the mountains will be like flakes of wool. And no friend will ask of a friend.' [(70): 8-10] 'That day shall a man flee from his brother. And from his mother and his father, and from his wife and children.' [(81): 34-37] 'Allah, the Exalted, will declare on the Day of Resurrection, 'Where are those who loved each other for the sake of My Grace? This Day, I shall shade them under My Shade, when there is only My Shade.' [Saheeh Muslim]

Fw: Few Islamic Etiquette (part 2)

-------Original Message-------
Date: 07-03-2011 09:50:30 PM
Subject: Few Islamic Etiquette (part 2)

In the name of Allah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate

"May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon You"

Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

Ethics of Greeting (Salam)

Islam has encouraged the custom of greetings among the members of Society because it leads to love and friendship. This is supported by the Prophet (pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "You will never enter Paradise until you become believers, and you will not become believers until you love each other. Shall I guide you to something that makes you love each other? Spread greetings with peace among you."  (Muslim).

                                                                                                      Ethics of Sitting

Greet attendants of the meeting or gathering, as pointed out in the Prophet (pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "If one comes to a meeting he should say: Assalamu Alaykum! (i.e. Peace be upon you!) and on leaving he should do the same, for the first greeting is not more important than the latter."  (Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi).

It is not appropriate to ask someone to leave his sitting place for someone else as pointed out in the Prophet
(pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "Never should anyone of you make someone rise from his place and sit in his place rather, make more room for others to sit."  (Bukhari and Muslim). "If someone leave his sitting place then returns to it, he will have more right to it"  as stated by the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, (Muslim).

Never separate two persons sitting as pointed out in the Prophet
(pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "It is not permissible for a man to separate two men (by inserting himself sitting between them) unless they give permission."  (Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi).

Never talk to a friend privately in the presence of a third person as pointed out in the Prophet
(pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "If there are three of you, never should two of them talk without the third until you mix with other people, for this would grieve the third."  (Bukhari).

Never sit in the middle of a circle or group of people, as pointed out in the Prophet
(pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "Damned is he who sits in the middle of a sitting group."  (Abu Dawood).

Leave space for others to sit, Allah said which meaning of is translated as: "O you who believe! When it is said, Make room! In assemblies, then make room; Allah will make way for you (hereafter). And when it is said, Come up higher! Go up higher; Allah will exalt those who have knowledge, to high ranks. Allah is Well-Aware of what you do."  (The Quraan, Chapter Az-Zukhruf, 43:11).

It is desirable to suppress yawning as far as possible as it is a sign of laziness, as pointed out in the Prophet
(pbuh), saying which meaning of is translated as: "Yawning is from Satan, so when one of you yawns let him try to repel it as far as possible, for if one utters "Ha" (when yawning) the devil will laugh at him."  (Bukhari and Muslim).

            About sneezing, the Holy Prophet
(pbuh), said which meaning of is translated as: "If one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah! And his Muslim brother should say to him: May Allah have mercy on you! Upon which he answers: May Allah guide you and make you well."  (Bukhari).

It is also advisable for a person, as stated by Allahs Messenger  (pbuh), said which meaning of is translated as: "on sneezing; to cover his mouth with his hand or garment and suppress his voice."  (Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi).

Avoid belching (burping) while sitting in the presence of others. According to Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, one man belched in the presence of Allahs Messenger
(pbuh), said to him which meaning of is translated as: "stop belching, The biggest eaters in this worldly life will be the hungriest in the Hereafter."  (Tirmidhi and Ibin Majah).

A person should not face those sitting with him with what they dislike.

Ethics of Gathering

Islam respects the feeling of people who gather at a place to make gathering desirable and repel all that cause people to hate gathering. Therefore, Islam instructs its followers to be clean-bodied, with no bad smell, and clean-dressed, with no disgusting sights. It also instructs them to listen to the speaker without interrupting him and to sit where they find room without stepping over peoples neck or causing them any inconvenience by pressing against them.

This is supported by the Prophet (pbuh), saying while addressing Muslims during Friday sermon which meaning of is translated as: "Whoever has a bath on Friday, puts on the best of his clothes, puts some scent on if any, then attends Friday prayer without crossing over peoples necks and performs whatever rakats he could. Then keep quiet when the Imam mounts the pulpit until he concludes prayer. His prayer will be an atonement for the whole week preceding that prayer."  (Abu Dawood).

Assalam Alaikum Wa Rahmath Ullahi Wa Barkatahu

ALL  FAMILY  MEMBERS  SHOULD  READ THIS, ESPECIALLY  CHILDREN!

A Lady Has Changed Her Habit Of How She Lists Her Names in Her Cell Phone Directory After Her Handbag Was Stolen.

Her Handbag, Which Contained Her Cell Phone, Credit Card, Purse, Etc.., Was Stolen.

Twenty Minutes Later She Called Her Husband, From A Pay Telephone Telling Him What Had Happened.

Her Husband Said, 'I Have Just Received Your Text Message Asking About Our Pin Number And I Have Replied A Little While Ago.'

When They Rushed Down To The Bank, The Staff Told Them All The Money Was Already Withdrawn.

The Thief Had Actually Used The Stolen Cell Phone To Text Her Husband Listed in The Directory And Got Hold Of Their Pin Number.

Within Twenty Minutes He Had Withdrawn All The Money From Their Bank Account.

Moral of The Story:

Do Not Disclose The Relationship Between You And The People On Cour call List.

Avoid Using Names Like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart,

Mom, Dad, Etc..,

And Very importantly, When Sensitive information is Being Asked For Through Text Messages, CONFIRM By Calling Back.

Also, When You Are Being Text Messaged By Friends Or Family To Meet Them Somewhere,
Be Sure To Call Back To Confirm Whether That Message Came From Them..

If You Do Not Reach Them,
Be Very Careful About Going Places To Meet 'Family And Friends' Who Text You.

PLEASE  PASS  THIS  ON.

I Never Thought About THAT!

As Of Right Now, Do You Have 'Home' Listed in Your Cell Phone Directory?
