By Asma bint Shameem     As world markets suffer from the ongoing global financial crisis and housing markets slump, as jobs are lost and unemployment rates rise high, as businesses close down and people don't have a source of income, you worry.   You worry about the growing global recession and its challenges. And you worry about your family, your kids, how to provide for them, how to put food on the table, how to pay the bills....   In times such as these, this is a reminder for my brothers and sisters, as the reminder always benefits the believers. "But remind, the Reminder will benefit the believers." (Surah adh-Dhaariyaat: 55)   KEEP YOUR IMAAN STRONG   1. Remember .... Nothing happens except by the will and decree of Allaah:   Belief in al-qadar (the Divine decree) is one of the pillars of our Imaan, and no ones faith is complete without it. So if you lost your job, it was by the Will and Decree of Allaah. Allaah says:   "No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (al-Lawh al-Mahfooz) before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allaah" (al-Hadeed:22)   Also the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi WA sallam) said: "Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you, and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship." (Tirmidhi-Saheeh)       2. It is Allaah that provides for you and NOT your employer;   Remember that Allaah is al-Razzaaq (the Provider) and the Best of those who provide. It was Allaah who was providing you before you lost your job and it is still He that will provide you after you lost it. The one who fed you when you were in your mother womb will also feed you when you are an adult. And it was not you who was putting food on the table for your family. Rather it was Allaah using you as a means to provide for them.   "Except for Allah, is there any other Creator who provides for you out of heaven and earth ? There is no god except He. Where then do you turn?" (Surah Faatir:3)     3. Know that your provision was written for you before you were even born:   Allaah had sent an angel to write down your provision for you when you were just a few days old in your mothers womb, and you will get it, no matter what. "(the angel) says, 'O Lord, male or female? Doomed or blessed? What is his provision? What is his Lifespan?' And that is written in his mother's womb." (Bukhaari)   There is nothing that can take your provision away. And you will not die until you have had your full provision. The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi WA sallam) said:   "The Holy Spirit (Jibreel) has inspired to me that no soul will die until it has completed its appointed term and received its provision in full, so fear Allaah and do not be desperate in seeking provision, and no one of you should be tempted to seek provision by means of committing sin if it is slow in coming to him, for that which is with Allaah can only be attained by obeying Him." (Saheeh al-Jaami, 2085)   4. It is a test for you from Allaah:   Remember that disasters and calamities are a test of a believer's patience. And so He will test you to see how strong you are and how you will react to His test. And know if Allaah loves a person, He tests him. "We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, and decrease of goods, life and fruits. Give glad tidings to the patient." (al-Baqarah:155)   5. Surely, it is a means of expiation of your sins:   Calamities are a means of expiation of sin and raising ones status.   The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said: "There is nothing that befalls a believer, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allaah will record one good deed for him and will remove one bad deed from him." (Muslim).    And he said: "Trials will continue to befall the believing man and woman, with regard to themselves, their children and their wealth, until they meet Allaah with no sin on them." (Tirmidhi, saheeh by al-Albaani) WHAT TO DO   1. Have tawakkul on Allaah    Always think to yourself...Allaah wouldnt decree something for me unless it was good for me. Have faith in Allaah's Words....   "But you may hate a thing although it is good for you, and may love a thing although it is evil for you. Allah knows, and you do not." (Baqarah:216)   The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said: "If you put your trust in Allaah in the true sense, He will grant your provision as He grants to the birds, who go out in the morning hungry and come back full." (Ahmad, Ibn Maajah and al-Tirmidhi). 2. Be patient   Remember that with every difficulty comes ease and with hardship comes relief.   "How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all his affairs are good and this does not apply to anyone except the believer. If something good happens to him he is grateful, and that is good for him, and if something bad happens to him he is patient, and that is good for him." (Muslim).  3. Review your life and make LOTS of Istighfaar   Look at your life. Is there something that you need to improve on? Is there something that you need to give up? Is there anything that may be a cause of Allaah's warning or punishment to you?   "And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned" [al-Shoora:30]   "A man may be deprived of provision by a sin that he commits."  (Ibn Maajah-saheeh by al-Albaani)   If there is such a thing, NOW is the time to fix yourself. Ask Allaah sincerely to forgive you and He will. There is no doubt in that.For He is al-Ghafoor, ar-Raheem.   'Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft‑Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.'"[Nooh 71:10-12]    Fear Allaah and obey Him as much as you can:   Obedience is the key to the Mercy of Allaah and fearing Him (taqwa) is a means to attain all success.   Allaah says: "And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allaah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allaah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allaah has set a measure for all things" [al-Talaaq:2-3]  Make duaa and do lots of good deeds   Never forget that Dua is the weapon of the believer. Pray to Allaah with the attitude of certainty and He will surely respond. Do a lot of acts of worship, such as reading Quraan, fasting, giving charity, etc. This will get rid of your worry and anxiety, and give you happiness, peace of mind and success in this dunya as well as in the Hereafter.   "Whoever works righteousness — whether male or female — while he (or she) is a true believer; verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)" (al-Nahl:97)   Also, worship at times of hardship and tribulation has a special sweetness to it and a great reward.    The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: "Worshipping at times of tribulation and confusion is like migrating to join me." (Muslim)    Uphold ties of kinship   If there are any family members that you have cut off from or are not on speaking terms, etc., correct that and ask them for forgiveness, even if it was not your fault. Why? Because the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:  "Whoever would like his provision to be increased and his life span to be extended, let him uphold the ties of kinship." Do your best to seek Halaal earnings.....   Work hard to find a means of living for your family, while relying on Allaah. That is a responsibility placed upon you by Him.   Imam Ahmad was asked about a man who sat in his house or in the masjid and said, "I will not do anything until my rizq comes to me." He said, "This is a man who has no knowledge. "Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allaah, and do not feel helpless." (Muslim).    BUT, do not lose sight of the Aakhirah   However, do realize that this world is only temporary and the REAL life is that of the Hereafter. This world should not be the main concern of the Muslim, rather our focus should be on what we do for the Aakhirah.   The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever is mainly concerned about the Hereafter, Allaah will make him feel independent of others and will make him focused and content, and his worldly affairs will fall into place. But whoever is mainly concerned with this world, Allaah will make him feel in constant need of others and will make him distracted and unfocused, and he will get nothing of this world except what is decreed for him." Once, the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam was brought a bucket of water. He drank from it and dipped it back into the well, which caused the well to emit the fragrance of musk. The Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam sweat was more fragrant than the finest scent. Sayyiduna Anas Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said, "The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam came to take a nap at our house and had perspired, so my mother came with a bottle and began to soak up the sweat. The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam woke up and said, 'What are you doing, Umm Sulaym?' She replied, 'We mix this sweat in our perfumes, and it is the finest scent.'" Sayyiduna Anas also said, "He was the most beautiful of Allah's creation I had seen, and his scent was the most fragrant, and his hands the softest."   Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said, "The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam was the best and most beautiful of people in his qualities. He was of medium height, with broad shoulders. His cheeks were smooth and his hair was black. His eyes were large, as if lined with antimony (kohl), with arched eyebrows. When he would place his over garment over his shoulders it would look like an ingot of silver. When he would laugh his teeth shone like pearls. I saw neither before him nor after him anyone like him SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam." "When the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam would open his beautiful mouth it was mostly smiles, revealing something like hailstones. Of Allah's servants, he had the most beautiful lips and the corners of his mouth were the softest." His complexion was fair (azhar). This means that the Prophet's complexion was fair without an admixture of redness, yellowness, or any other color. Inside the Prophet's Mosque, Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar would frequently recite the verses of his uncle Abu Talib in description of the Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam complexion: A fair one, by virtue of whose face the rain is sought A caretaker of the orphans, a guardian of the widows   Those who would hear him would say, "That is how the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam was."   Some have described him a fair complexioned with a bit of redness. They spoke the truth; however, this slight redness would appear when the sun would shine and when the wind would blow during the forenoon. The fairness of his complexion would take on a reddish tint during that time; all the while the skin color under his garments retained a fair white complexion. No one has any doubts about this. Those who described the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam as fair complexioned meant his skin color under his garments, and they were correct; and those who described him as fair with a bit of redness meant his appearance in the sun during the forenoon, and they were also correct. The Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam complexion was undoubtedly fair, and the rosiness or redness associated with it was on account of the sun and wind. The beads of the Prophet's sweat SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam were like pearls, and his scent was more fragrant than the finest perfumes. His hair was natural without a part [in the middle]; it was beautiful, and was neither curly nor straight... The Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam hair was above his ears. Some say that it would fall upon his shoulders, and most say that it reached his ear lobes. The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam would occasionally plait his hair into four braids; his right ear would come out between the two braids surrounding it, and the left ear would come out between the two braids surrounding it, and the two ears would appear with their whiteness between these braids as if they were two resplendent stars lit up in the midst of the blackness of his hair. The Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam gray hair appeared around his temples... and most of his gray hairs were in his beard above his chin. The Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam gray hairs appeared as if they were strands of silver that shone in the midst of the blackness of his hair. And when he would rub the yellowish gray hairs — which he did frequently — they would appear as if they were strands of gold that shone in the midst of the blackness of his hair.   The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam was the handsomest of men, the most resplendent of them in light. Nobody would describe him without comparing his face to the full moon. Those among them would say, "Perhaps we would look upon the moon when it is full and say, 'Indeed, the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam is more beautiful in our eyes than the moon!' He was of fair complexion, with a bright face that would shine like the full moon." "The Prophet's SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam pleasure and displeasure and happiness could be seen from his face: when he was pleased with something or something made him happy, his face was like a mirror and its brilliant light would shine upon the walls, and when he was angry his face would change color and his eyes would redden." The Companions used to say he is as his companion Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu described him: Honest, the Chosen One, calling unto good Like the light of the full moon that cleaves darkness They would say, "He was like that SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam." Sayyiduna Umar Ibn al-Khattab would frequently recite the verses of Zuhayr bin Abi Salma: Were you to be anything other than human You would have been the brilliance of the full moon The Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam had a broad forehead and perfectly arched eyebrows. His eyebrows were of medium thickness and no hair in them was out of place. There was a space between them that appeared as if it were pure silver, as well as a vein that would expand when he would become angry. When not angry, this vein would not be seen. "The Prophet's eyes were large with dark pupils, showing a slight reddishness, and he had long, lush eyelashes. His nose was aquiline. Between his teeth there was a slight space," a separation like the teeth of a comb, except that his blessed teeth were straight all around... "When he would smile it would appear as something like hailstones in clouds, and when he would laugh it would shine like the radiance of lightning..." "His face was neither elongated nor completely circular. His beard was thick, his chest broad..." His limbs were well proportioned, as if his fingers were rods of silver. The palms of his hands were softer than silk and were fragrant, as if they were the hands of a perfumist, whether he applied scent to them or not. "When someone would shake his blessed hand it would leave a fragrance that stayed with him for the remainder of his day. And when he would pat the head of a child that child would stand out among the other children due to the fragrance on his head... " And yet, despite all of this, Imam al-Qurtubi says: The Prophet's complete beauty has not been fully manifested, for if it was disclosed to us in full, our eyes would be unable to behold him SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. That day when Malak ul-Maut will approach me?   For surely he will knock on my door, oh so suddenly My choice of place or time, it's not going to be   On the day that I meet him, what will I do? Theres no hiding that day, no one to run to   What will be my response to him? O What will I say? I didn't prepare for this....please come back another day?!   Please go back...go back. I'm just not ready yet! Just a few more minutes...seconds... Any time that I can get!   I would want to say goodbye but he wouldn't let me I would want another chance but that surely couldn't be   When he will come for me, I wonder, will I be in heedlessness Worrying little of the hereafter, in my state of carelessness   Or would I be the one who loves and lives upon the Sunnah? Would the last words on my tongue be la illaaha illAllaah?   Would my kafan be made of silk, being sent from Heaven above? Would it be so soft, so fragrant, wrapping my soul with love?   Or would it be so rough, so ugly, made of fire from Hell A wrath, a torment from my Lord, full of nasty smell?     And what would happen when they bury me, six feet underground When they lay me on my bed of dust, with no one else around   So scared and alone....the thought keeps haunting me In what state will I be....when the angels will question me?   Will I be able to answer them....the questions they will ask It seems so easy now....but what a lofty task!   Will I be scared to see them, will they be of horror to me? Will I be able to bear them, when they ist in front of me?   Will I be able to give them those answers so easily? Or will I stumble and stagger....not knowing, confusedly?   Will I stutter and stammer just like a hypocrite would? Or would I be able to respond to them just as a Muslim should?   Will my grave be a piece of Jannah, green and open wide... With Mercy from my Lord so Kind, my good deeds on my side?   Will I rest in my grave ever so peacefully? Or will my grave be a wretched place of torture for me?   I pray my grave is not a bed...of torment and agony I hope so earnestly that my Rabb will forgive me   And when everyone will be raised with the rest of humanity In what state will I be.....when my Lord will resurrect me?   Will I be pleased to see my Rabb? Will I be eager to greet Him? But more importantly will HE be pleased with me, the Day I meet Him?   Will my face be black with sin that day or will it be shining white? Will my scale of deeds weigh heavy for me....would it be feather light?   O where will I run then ...where will I hide? This is what scares me! In what state will I be....when the book of deeds is handed to me?   Will it be given in my left hand or I will hold it in my right? Will I be guided firm on the Siraat; my Imaan so big, so bright?   Will I be among the wretched or will Allaah be pleased with me? In what state will I be...when I stand in front of the Almighty?   I shudder and I tremble when I think of that Great Day When I ask myself..."Am I ready to meet my Lord today?"   I cry as I lay here....thinking. I shed my wretched tears Please forgive me O Allaah, how I wasted all those years   I sinned all my life Yaa Maalik, Oh how I forsook you Unless you forgive me O Allah, how can I meet you?!   My sins are so heavy Yaa Rabb, I can hardly bear the weight But I'm hoping for your Mercy, Allaah, don't leave me to my fate   For how long will I live? I don't know when I'll die But like the prophet said I should expect it so close by   Let me stop this way of life; let me snap out of this trance Let me turn my life around now that I have this perfect chance   Because today I am closer to my Lord than I was yesterday Did it ever occur to me that today could be my last day? However, our lives and outlook should bear remembrance in the true sense of the word. Now that we have the tremendous advantage of acquiring and spreading knowledge, there is no excuse on our part for not following the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi WA Aalihi WA Sallam to reinforce and fasten our covenant with Allah SubHanuhu WA Ta'ala. Let us make ourselves ready to welcome the Blessed Month of Rabi' al-Awwal Sharif with some special gifts and pleasant changes in ourselves. There are plenty of things we can do, for e.g. 1. We can try to recite the Holy Quran al-Kareem at least once in a day. Let it be One Ayah, One Ruku', One Chapter or as much as we can. 2. We must try our level best to offer all five (5) obligatory prayers at their particular timings and not to leave Jama'ah (Congregation), especially the FAJR Prayer. 3. Try observing a voluntary (nafl) fast on Monday for thankfulness because the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi WA Sallam himself fasted on this day. 4. My brothers who shave the blessed Sunnah of Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) I.e. The beard, can put their effort to beautify their faces with the beard. Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah has said, "Do the opposite of what the polytheists do; let the beard grow long and clip the mustache." A version has, "trim the mustache down and leave the beard." 5. My sisters who do not observe a proper Veil (Hijab) can protect themselves by observing the proper veil (Hijab), as it's also necessary for a Muslim woman. In Surah 33, Verse 59, Almighty Allah says: "O Prophet! Enjoin upon your wives, your daughters and women believers to draw their clothes around them. That is more proper, so that they may be recognized and not be molested." A newly converted Muslim woman when observed Hijab for the first time, said, "It feels more protected than having huge security of armed forces" – WA alHamduLILLAH 6. Let us delete all movies and songs saved in our PCs, laptops, iPods, cell phones or any other device and move the CDs, DVDs and cassettes to the trash bin. It is stated in Bayhaqi's Shu'ab al-Iman and Kanz al-'Ummal that Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) said, "Songs (Music) cultivate Nifaq (evil) in the minds similar to water growing the crop" 7. We can make an attempt to feed the poor and destitute according to our own ability. 8. We can try making arrangements for clothes or other requirements of someone in need or of a widow. 9. We can make an effort and make arrangements for the fees and books of a poor or orphan child. 10. Try making arrangements for the medicines of a needy patient or at least helping his family with clothing and other requirements. 11. If a person in need has taken loan from us, we should either pardon the entire loan or a part of it based on our own ability, just for the sake of Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala and the blessed birth of the Holy Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam. Also, the person can be given some more time to return the loan. 12. Try meeting relatives, friends and neighbours and presenting them with authentic books on the biography of the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, admonishing them to be steadfast on the teachings of Islam and making them pay attention towards Salah, Sawm and other Islamic duties. 13. Those having an habit or I must say disease of swearing and using abusive slang language in their conversations must leave this act as it is detested by Almighty Allah and is taken as an unethical act even by the general public. 14. Another Beautiful Sunnah Mubarak of our Beloved Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him is to wear the blessed Turban. Wearing a turban is the tradition of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam), especially during the prayers. The prayer that is performed wearing a turban carries more reward and according to another narration, the prayer performed wearing a turban carries 70 times reward than that of without the Turban. 15. Recite as much as Durood Sharif as we can. Apart from the virtues and blessings of reciting Durood Sharif described in Ahadith, this will also help us avoid unnecessary and unwanted talks and gossips and reward for avoiding useless conversation will be achieved as a bonus in sha Allah!! 16. We must try and make a paramount effort towards lighting up our homes and surrounding area and making the pathways clean. 17. We must keep our parents pleased and contented with ourselves at the extreme. We have to make sure that we don't give them a single chance to complain to any of our action that can possibly hurt them. 18. We must try transforming our internal conflicts into love and making a covenant to live and work together and that none amongst us will ever create conflicts. 19. We have to respect our elders especially our parents, grandparents and teachers. Also, we should be kind, affectionate and loving towards our younger and give them sweets, toffees and other small gifts that please them. 20. Last but not the least, we must read and share the narrations of celebrating the blessed Birth of the Beloved Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him from the authentic books of our prominent Ahl as-Sunnah Scholars in sha ALLAH!! To conclude, If we ascetically act upon all the above said advices or even few of them, I am pretty sure that we would become eligible to be called a practical and true Muslim. May Allah give us the tawfeeq, increase our strength and keep us firm upon whatever good we intend to do. The arrival of the Beloved Messenger SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam to this world is the greatest gift from the gifts of Allah SubHanuhu WA Ta'ala. The Noble Qur'an, in several places, teaches us to mention the gifts of Allah SubHanuhu WA Ta'ala immensely and that we should express joy and happiness due to them and we should thank Allah SubHanuhu WA Ta'ala for the gifts bestowed upon us. Thus, on the occasion of the blessed month of Rabi' al-Awwal, Eid Milad of the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam is celebrated throughout the Islamic World. Let us also celebrate the birth of the Beloved Master SallAllaho Alaihi WA Sallam and thus express joy and happiness for this great bounty that Allah SubHanuhu WA Ta'ala has bestowed upon us.   Following are some advices regarding preparations for Rabi' al-Awwal Sharif from Shaykh Habib Umar bin Muhammad bin Salem Bin Hafiz (may Allah preserve him) that he delivered while answering to the following questions: Is any special formula of prayer upon the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that we should read during Rabi` al-Awwal? He said that there is no doubt that this is the month of bestowing prayers upon the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Many of the pious of the Ummah are united with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in this month. Any formula that we read is beneficial. You benefit according to the degree to which your heart is filled with the intention of obeying the command (to bestow prayers upon him) and love, longing and veneration for him. Read whatever formula you know and while doing so ask Allah to relieve the suffering of the Muslims. Habib `Ali bin Salim al-Ada`j bin Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Salim saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) at the blessed shubbak (the grille in front of his grave) and asked him to teach him a formula to read. He told him to read: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ على سَيِّدِنا مُحَمَّدٍ حَبِيبِ الرَّحْمَنْ عَدَدَ ما يَكوُن و ما قَدْ كَانْ "O Allah, bestow Your prayers upon our Master Muhammad, The Beloved of the Most Compassionate to the number of things that will be and that were." What is the most beautiful gift that someone can give to the Messenger of Allah in the month of Rabi` al-Awwal? In reality we are unable to benefit him in any way but what pleases him is for us to understand his speech and his teachings and through that to attain high stations. He is thus content with that which benefits us. One of the greatest of those things (as we understand from the Book and the Sunnah) is for us to be a means of guidance for someone. That person may be a non-Muslim who accepts Islam or a disobedient or heedless Muslim who repents and becomes upright. Another thing is giving life to his Sunnah and establishing it. If we establish the Sunnah in our homes and teach it to our children this makes him happy because it us that benefit from this. He said in the hadith: "Whoever brings life to my Sunnah during the time of corruption of my Ummah will have the reward of a martyr" (or in one narration "one hundred martyrs"). Another thing is to do good to the creation in general, to the believers specifically, and the elite of the believers more specifically. A further thing is to strengthen our love for the believers, for the people of the Prophetic Household and for the Companions. Finally, we should make big intentions in Rabi' al-Awwal, such as gathering together with our brothers and attending or arranging lessons or courses. How can we inspire people to long for the Messenger of Allah? By mentioning his virtues, qualities and his life. By embodying his character and his dealing. By deepening our love, longing and veneration for him.
